IP GEO LOCATION WAAAY OFF

I just ran a few of your tests on a couple locations and domains. Very useful stuff, for the most part. Just out of idle curiosity, I ran the GET IP GEO LOCATION query against my own IP address. I don't know where it got that information, it doesn't show up on any traceroute I've ever run and it's off by about 3,000 miles! Specifically, it showed my location as being in Recton, VA. My ISP is [the old] PacBell.net. That's PACIFIC BELL, not even available as far east as Virginia. I'm in San Francisco. The Internet Service Provider for the website I was checking on is located in Fremont, CA (about 35 miles from here.) Just curious as to how this information is gathered and why it could be so completely off.

RE:IP GEO LOCATION WAAAY OFF

Dear Sam,
ip geo-location is not a scientific tool... and it can be completely wrong!
It's a database manually edited by volunteers.....

RE:IP GEO LOCATION WAAAY OFF

I think Sam is right. See for example 85.145.192.1 on http://www.hostip.info/ or http://www.tcpiputils.com/ip-geo-location/85.145.192.1. You get completely different answers.

RE:IP GEO LOCATION WAAAY OFF

Yes Rick, as i told before IP GEO LOCATION is not an exact science!
So you get completely different results based on the database you are querying.....
